How to find your passion
This email newsletter was going to be over 1000 words. I’ve written those words out, but I am not happy with how they come together as a whole. So, after some thought I’ve rewritten the idea simply. I’ll release the full thing as a blog one day when I can muster the motivation to finish it.
Before I get started on that, here is some stuff I’ve been working on:
Obsidian.md guide for beginners
Obsidiam.md is a markdown text editor. It is different from other markdown editors because it has jumped on the linked thought band wagon. “Linked Thought” refers to a group of note taking applications that allow you to seamlessly link thoughts and notes together. It is like having your very own wikipedia. The applications go much further than note taking. Applications like Obsidian.md and Roam Research are spearheading a knowledge management revolution. People have used it to write academic papers and novels. People also use it to support their own work: everyone from software developers to lawyers are seeing the value in the idea of linked thought.
If you are unfamiliar with markdown it can be tricky to get started with obsidian. This article is meant to be a quick reference guide on the basics of Obsidian and the Markdown specific to obsidian. It is aimed at beginners and people who are unfamiliar with markdown.
Me harping on about caffeine and coffee again
I am sure by now you know I quit caffeine for 30days. Here is a video i did about it. Watch it, don’t watch it.
Don’t just follow your passions, broaden your passions
These are words by Barbara Oakley. They’re from this Ted talk that she did:
I’ve realized that a lot of what I do for fun stems around learning new things. So I’ve decided to dedicate a large amount of time to learning how to learn and study effectively. This email newsletter is an outlet for that. And it turns out, according to the hours-upon-hours of research that I have done in the past week, that teaching is one of the best ways of learning.
I am not going to go into all that I have learned yet. I am still in a “discovery phase” but these words by Barbara Oakley really stuck with me. It’s something we observe too often these days. People are told to “follow their passions”, yet they don’t have any passions outside of tiktok and the latest Netflix series.
If you ever feel like “eh, I am not passionate about anything”, this may be for you. Before you follow your passion, why don’t you go see what things are out there to be passionate about?
Don’t get stuck in a Job or degree you hate, because you’re passionate about something your mom told you be passionate about.
- Read a book about something you wouldn’t usually read about
- Try a different youtube channel
- Watch a documentary
- Try a new sport
- Pick up a musical instrument
- Try making model airplanes
- Climb a tree
- Dip some candles in wax
- Have a conversation with someone you don’t agree with
The point is, try something new. And if you don’t like it, try something else. Rinse, repeat.
